How Foreigners can Boost Reforms in Japanese Society
−Japan Needs Foreign Residents

Speaker: Marutei Tsurunen, Member of the House of Councillors

In my report I will give my view on how I expect foreign residents in Japan to take part in reforms for Japanese society. There are about 2 million foreign residents in Japan and they come from all over the world. In addition, there are about half a million naturalized foreigners and I am one of them. So Japanese society is not only for Japanese nationals any longer.

Foreigners in Japan are one part of Japanese society. They can and they should have influence on society as individuals and also as groups. But their contribution will bear fruit only if they are able to cooperate with the Japanese citizens around them.

Also I will tell about my political mission and the motives for it. I was sent to Japan as a missionary but 12 years ago I realized that politics was my way to serve society. I will explain some of my duties as a member of the House of Councilors.

Some foreigners assume that I tackle mainly problems that are related to foreign residents. Of course those issues are a very important part of my job but there are also many other things I feel are very crucial part of my mission in politics. I will discuss them, too.

Finally I’d like to disclose some facts behind my success in politics. I hope my positive stance will give the audience some hints as to how we can achieve our goals to better the society we are living in.

    Sincerity moves heaven.
